JOHANN BAPTIST SCHENK (1753-1836)
Beethoven's secret tutor (?) (1793).

Johann Baptist Schenk (1753-1836), composer of popular musical comedies in Vienna. He studied with Georg Christoph Wagenseil and was introduced to works of Palestrina, Galuppi, Hasse, Haendel and Bach kennen. Schenk worked mainly as piano and composition teacher. In his autobiography - wirtten after Beethoven's death (!) he claims to have taught Beethoven secretly counterpoint while Beethoven was studying with Haydn.

Schenk's most succesfull work is the musical comedy "Der Dorfbarbier" (1796):    → Artikel 13395.
