JOSEPH HAYDN (1732-1809)
Beethoven's teacher in Vienna 1792-1794
Haydns "Die Sieben letzten Worte des Erlösers am Kreuze"
– maybe a model for Beethoven's "Kantate auf den Tod Josephs II" WoO 87 (?)
Haydn composed his "Instrumental-Passion" for the Good Friday celebrations in Cadiz 1786. The first edition of the parts and vocal score was published by Artaria in Vienna. 1787.
It is quite possible, that Beethoven saw this Haydn composition as a strutural model for his great cantata WoO 87 mourning the death of Emperor Joseph II. (1790). Beethoven presented one of his both Imperial Cantatas (WoO 87 or WoO 88) to Haydn , who passed Bonn on his travel from London back to Vienna 1792, and Haydn accepted Beethoven as student.
